Hi forum,

I wonder if I could tap you knowledge !

I am looking for an AC - DC PSU tht will take in mains and put out 12V 4A or more.

I wish to drive a device that requires that input but its external and so the PSU needs to be compact and safe to have on a desk top or floor.

What uses such a PSU - What can I nick one from ?

Cheers in advance.

Ron.

Pretty much any PSU will be fine. I'd look into one that's taken from a custom form factor like those Dells that have them integrated into the monitor or something if size is the biggest concern. You may also be able to pull one from a bundled case package for something like a mini-ITX system, but that might be a little expensive. In any case, most PC PSUs should be able to deliver over 14A so essentially as much as you need, and I think if you want 12V that's probably your best bet.

You could also use an Xbox 360's power supply.

They are obviously safe and fairly compact, as the external from the console (I actually rest my feet on mine when I'm cold, havn't died yet )

And you can pick them up off eBay for £10

They use a standard AC plug, and then theres the cable out the other side for the DC connection to the Xbox, all the connections might not be at 12v, but certainly some are, because I know the DVD drive runs off 12v.

I'll have a look and see if I can find a diagram of the pins.

Edit:

Just ignore the instructions for connecting it to a computer PSU, it's the top diagram you want, that shows that the row of three pins in the middle, are all +12V

Best of luck with the project.
