To my mind stripping the PSU to replace the fan because the bearings may have gone don't equate to buying a brand new PSU, which would be fairly inexpensive.

It is possible Adam, but it's not something for the faint-hearted.

Is it noisy because it's running at peak all the time (the fan i mean), how is your case airflow set up?

i think yes,it must be constantly at peak, its always loud. erm, case airflow seems fine, nothing is too, hot, i have a cpu fan and gpu fan, both pretty quiet.

Have you (at the very least) got an intake fan at the front of the case and an exhaust at the rear of the case inline or nearly inline with the cpu fan?

Is the psu located at the top of the case or the bottom? Is the psu fan pointed toward the innard's of the case or not? (some mount upside down in particular cases).

no intake fan at front, although side has many small holes and the back is very open, the cpu fan is about the same level as the holes in the back, the psu is at the top at the back and the fan is pointing towards the outside of the case,

I'd suggest the fan is noisy (maybe) because it's also the primary exhaust fan for the system by the sounds of it, so not only is it getting rid of the hot air from the psu, it's also having to expel the hot air from the system.

Whats the case you've got? As it sounds to me by what you've put that you've got fan grills for mounting fans on the front and rear of the case but don't have any installed.

It's not really going to improve your system's temp's using holes in the case as the main ventilation, this will more than likely just create more dust in the system.
