I have a Rosewill 550W PSU and I am upgrading my cpu to a 3.2GHz AMD X2 6400+ and a 8800GTS video card(possibly run 2 later). Then Im adding Vista Ultimate 64-bit also.

Do I need a bigger power supply? I would hate to take a risk of under-powering my system.

i don't think you need a bigger power supply. i think you need a higher QUALITY power supply. Rosewill is the worst in the business buddy. they're not even recommended for GENERAL use. i'm surprised it hasn't exploded into flames yet.

look for one by antec, corsair, or enermax. the enermax liberty 620 watt might be a good buy for you. it's about 115-120 dollars on newegg.com if i'm not mistaken. check it out.

Well this PSU had great reviews and a great price. I also have a buddy that has the exact same supply and they are both running great. I was curious at the time because I wasnt certain on Rosewill. My last system was powered by Thermaltake. How about them? Cant go wrong with them can you?

lol, I have a Rosewill to, same one actually, at least I think. Its a 550W also. You deffenitly need to get a better quality PSU. I plan on doing that also when I buy a 8800GT. I bought my Rosewill for the same reason you bought yours, it had great reviews on newegg. GO to this website.

That is a list of what PSU's are good and what ones are not recomended, hopefully it will help you decide what to get.

here's the deal with the power supply....

if you get a 550-600 watt psu for about 50-60 bucks, you're getting fleeced. it's usually going to end up being a horrible power supply. and all the things i've heard about rosewill make me shy away from them....a lot...they're well and truly, that terrible.

on average, for about 500 watts, you should be spending close to 80-90 dollars. otherwise, it will end up being bad quality.

it's just that you NEVER EVER want to skimp on the power supply. after all, it's the most important unit of the entire setup. what good is a 5000 dollar monster compy if it doesn't even have power?

i'm just trying to help you find a PSU that you know is reliable, efficient, and good quality, and won't burst into flames like many of them have.

if i want to find a good PSU, i look at this:
http://forums.firingsquad.com/firing...read.id=111309

it's a list of PSUs from best to worst. if i were you, i'd aim for tier 2 and above because with a system like the one you're making, you will need all the power and efficiency you can get.

don't get suckered into some piece of junk. it may have a few good reviews, but most likely they haven't heard about Rosewill's reputation, and there probably aren't more than 20 reviews for it.

i usually stick to the ones that people actually buy. and match the criteria i mentioned.

but please...PLEASE. i beg you. don't skimp on this. it will SUCK big time if you end up getting a PSU that won't do the job or won't do it well.

lawl. rosewill == FAIL!

i TOLD you you'd never live that one down sam. hahahahah.
ahhh...this gave me a good laugh when i read about the brand of psu AMD4LIFE had.

but sam is definitely right with sending you that list. i would have done so myself given the chance as i have it bookmarked too.

aim for at LEAST tier 2. with the system you'll be running, something with a ton of performance isn't a bad thing. the PSU is the most important part of any system. i IMPLORE you, don't skimp on it or you'll start experiencing things that will make you wish you had reconsidered your PSU choice.

MY GOD! Enermax Galaxy is extremely high and not too many reviews either from Newegg. Which I am a very loyal customer to these guys.

if you think you can afford it, then by all means. you'll have the best one on the market according to that list :)

it's rather expensive. and you may want to be careful about your case. because if you don't have a case that can support such a big power supply, then you'll regret buying it. what's the point in getting such a power house if you can't even fit it in the tower? :(
