Not long ago i bought a 650w PSU for about £25, I now see my error,

when i turn on my computer, the lights come on and the fans spin for a bout a second,

it then immediately turns off and it stays off for about 10s before powering on and booting as normal.

I've also noticed a random buzzing sound coming from the PSU, when it buzzes seems to be completely random, sometimes it buzzes under load, other times it buzzes when idle

Is this a problem? it is time for a new PSU? should i stop using my comp until i get a new one?

Yes it's probably not right.

Stop using the PC as if it goes it could take the mobo with it and replace it.

Anything relatively big named

Antec, Coolermaster, Thermaltake, Enermax, OCZ, Corsair to name a few. If you've found one that looks like its had some good reviews post it on here and someone will check it out.

Get the CoolerMaster. Modular is awesome, and it's a solid brand.

as a rule of thumb, in order not to get screwed, 500watts should cost about 90 US dollars.and obviously as the voltage goes higher, so does the price. the coolermaster, for both price and voltage was a solid piece of equipment, and i agree it is an excellent brand.

the Enermax Liberty 620 watt is also a very very top notch power supply. last i saw, it cost about 120 US dollars. i'd look into buying either one honestly. it may seem pricey, but you should NEVER skimp when it comes to computers and their power supplies. ever. period.

thanks for the help guys, strange thing is that i underclocked my q6600 back to stock and now the problems seem to have stopped.
Any one know why this could be? thanks again

Maybe the PSU couldn't handle that extra bit of power required for your overclocked Q6600.

If I were you I would buy a new PSU asap, even though the problem "seems" to have gone.

My under-rated thermaltake PSU damaged my graphics card permanently, but it was still under warranty, so I just had a replacement card sent and bought a new PSU.

When you overclock you draw more power, which puts the PSU under more load.
