mY FRIENDS COMPUTER SHUTS ITSELF DOWN SHORTLY AFTER IT BOOTS UP.
sHE'S HAD POWER PROBLEMS BEFORE IN THE PAST SO i EVEN INSTALLED A ups WITH sOFTWARE MONITORING FUNCTIONS.
i SUSPECT IT'S A POWER PROBLEM BUT WHERE DO i INVESTIGATE FIRST.

borrow a PSU (computer power supply) from another computer and put it in the faulty computer and see if that works ok.

also it might be an overheating problem, if the processor is overclocked return it to its factory setting in the bios and deffently make sure that the CPU heat sink is in propper contact with the CPU its self, you may have to apply thermal paste to it.

Firstly, I'd check your keyboard, to see if the CapsLock light is switched on...

Next, in addition to what was said previously by Spencer2004, I'd look at the processor fan, a lot of the time this problem is caused by overheating. If the computer is just switching off, then it's probably an overheating problem, whereas if it's physically shutting down, check the power switch connections, and make sure the PSU can take the full load of all the components attached to the system. Brownout can cause the system to shut itself down.
