it entirely depends on your computer, if its an average computer with dual core, couple of hard drives, an optical drive and a low power graphics card any one around 450watts will do you. however if you have something like a quad core with a high end graphics card with some raptors and other fancy stuff you will need a good quality psu of about 650 (or more) watts.

i cant reccomend any good makes but heres some psu units that are good http://search.ebay.co.uk/_ATX-Standa...inZtQQsbrsrtZd

About the makes for the 650W, you should go for the Enermax Infinity (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=567861) which is 105pounds but the higher you go with wattage the higher the price. DO NOT buy any high wattage PSU for a very low price cos in that way you would be killing your PC

Whilst your environment point is well taken Mike (I never leave anything on when it's not in use, no, seriously) You need to be looking at efficiency in psu's in regards to saving the earth and all that, not the wattage.

For instance this an Enermax 500w is around 82% efficient, meaning when running at peak it will need to draw 590w from the mains to output the 500w.

A typical generic psu is around 50% efficient, so a 500w version of one of these will need to draw 1kw (!!) when running at peak.

Plus, due to the materials used they also fail more quickly, so you've all those nice chemical coatings, and metals thrown in the refuse.

Hi Cew27,

what is it that you want a recommendation on - wattage or brand?

If its wattage then probably best to put the full spec on here then one of the mods will give you a good idea of what you really need in terms of power. When I was looking for a PSU I found that people were telling me conflicting things in terms of power, but I went with the advice I got here and it was good advice.

In terms of brands there are many good ones around. The mods tend to favour Enermax, which get very good reviews, especially the Enermax Infiniti series. I recently bought a Corsair 620HX (620w), which I'm very happy with - stable, quiet, very good reviews, very efficient, and came in a little cheaper than the Enermax Infiniti.
