Default How to downscale scans?

Hello there.

Online applications are handy, less expensive and less complicated, but since i have only two middle-of-the road, average e-mail accounts that allow only 4 MB of files to be annexed, i have problems with sending my scanned foto-cover and certificates and so on...

So, why does an average scan take up so much space ( appr 20MB) in the 1st place?

And how can i e-mail a complete, if short, application with cover letter, foto, cv and two-ish certificates and annex the whole lot? By 7-zipping it? Still too much room, and who knows the secretary at the receiving end of the 'line' may be a computer dummy like me, who doesn't know how to unzip...
GER is not Finland or Japan, you know

So, is there a possibility of my downsizing scans to a 'normal' size, like 500 KB or so? After all its mostly only text, black and white, no big deal...
I have a HP deskjet F380

Oh yes, there are e-mail features like, Premium things, that would allow for bigger files to be sent (up to 50MB?), but i'm reticent to activate those because...those are trial features or they involve some form of commitment...

Have you tried scanning your documents in a lower resolution this lowers the amount of space and also changing the save format, i.e a windows bmp file takes more space than a jpg or a gif

Yep ... if you save as .jpg instead of .bmp. it will be significantly smaller, as zerocool says.
Try different dpi settings in your scanner software ..... 200 dpi should be good for most uses.
