It's mainly preference, however cost also makes a difference, personally, I prefer Nikon, and have had a digital compact camera, and a DSLR and both are great, lenses are of very good quality, as are the sensors. However Cannon are also considered to be the same. But for compact cameras, there are far more manufacturers that are good.
