Set the fan to fixed 50% or higher.

You have no fans on your computer whatsoever besides the CPU and graphics card? Is your case a giant wooden box or something?

What is the temp it is reaching? i just bought an ATI HD4670 and that was reaching nearly 100c in games ,you could try buying a pci exhaust fan ,that will take out all the harmful warm air inside your case . i bought one for £3.99 and it was amazing how much warm air it was drafting out.

You may have a bad card just, mines was bad, so i exchanged it for an Nvidia card instead.

Do you have a good enough PSU cause i was told that too could make your card run much hotter than what its ment to peak at. if your PSU is failing or has a low amperage this could have some afftect maybe. what is your computer spec?

Also its good if when you get new hardware to do a full reinstall of the o/s , dont know if that does help anything at all, but if you havnt got much stuff on your computer to backup and you can reinstall everyting back the same way it was in under an hour, then that could be worth a shot too.

try reseating the card ,dont do this if you dont know how too , better to have an anti static wrist strap if your going to go inside your pc case at all. reseat it if you can, make sure you have all the updated drivers and chipset drivers for your motherboard, try running a game while you have the side of your case opened. make sure your cpu fan is working.

if nothing works and its still failing, then could be the card is faulty or maybe your power supply. try running RivaTuner and set the a profile for fan speed to run at 100% and maybe just lower your gpu & memory clocks on your card a few %.

what card did you have before? was the same power supply running that ok?

Hi robin, does sound very much the same as what was happening to me with the HD4670, but i didnt get a shutdown problem, but temps was nearing 100c in a few games, some other games it did not yield such high temps.

What games are running when the shutdown happens? maybe try a few dfferent games and see if card shuts the system down on them.

Try RivaTuner and set a profile for your gpu fan. set it to say 85% > 100% 100% or if you use the ATI Overdrive control panel, just max the fan out, if it isnt to loud and then drop the Gpu clocks down say 50Mhz for core and drop memory clock down too.

I dropped mines down from 750Mhz core to 600Mhz and ran fan speed at 50% , i know this is not good as we cant get to use the card as its designed to be used at, but it might just cure the problem of the high temp readings and the shutdowns for you. and its not that much of a performance loss really and by doing this . Does your fan spin up to cool the card much when in a game before shut down? maybe just a bad card and the increase in power means the psu doesnt know what to do, am not sure how this works and would need someone that really knows about this stuff to answer that one

If you are not happy , just return the card and get a replacment of same card again. If then these problems still exist, then maybe need to start looking at better cooling and even start too look at your PSU, Motherboard & Ram.

GPUs can get upto very high temps now they can handle it, but really anything over 80c would be kinda worrying , and that heat combined with cpu , hdd adds up to one very hot case with that warm air just hanging around the components

If you have a decent case you should not be running with the side panel off. The cases are designed for maximum airflow across the motherboard and components out and removing the side panel lets warm air stagnate around components.
