I have a 8600GT Graphics Card and mine kept freezing until I updated the graphics card driver and that sorted it out . So try updating your driver and it might sort out the problem for you.

unfortunatly as far as I know, there isn't a way of knowing what your PSU is without opening the case, unless it has a sticker on the back. This is because there isn't any compunication between the PSU and the motherboard.

It might also be overheating because it is covered in dust.

You really need to crack the case open... theres nothing you can break inside unless you start fiddling with stuff.

Normally "I agree with such and such" are considered useless posts, but this time I' need to say that I agree with Serverguy. Even if its only to put some weight behind his post... With the issue your friend is currently experiencing, you got two options:

1: you crack the case open yourself and try to sort the problem out.
2: you bring it to a repair shop.

Cheers:
Chris.

Oh... and by the way... It could indeed also be an overheating issue. People are always quick to blame the graphics card if their system is freezing but you'd be surprised how many are loosing time fixing their issues because they are convinced that the graphics card is at fault while it is in fact another part of the system causing the problem.

It might be a good idea to post the system spec here and let us know how old the system is. Since your friend is so reluctant to open up his case, I will presume that there have been no recent hardware updates although if would be good if you could confirm this to be sure.

If you have trouble identifying parts of the system, just download and install "Everest". It'll nicely tell you what is inside the system.

Cheers:
Chris
