Default 8800gt upgrade or a downgrade as it seems

Hi new to the forum so hey, Anyway this is my problem ive recently built a new top rig but i hadnt upgraded the graphics card till the other day, my problem seem to be that after upgrading from a 7900gtx to a 8800gt im getting lower performance at first after checking a few other forums if there was a common problem people always asked waht powersuppy they were using so i checked mine but i highly doubt this as its a enermax galaxy 1000w ive checked the right cable is connected after a few experiment any help would be much appreciated my system spec is as follows

Asus maximus Extreme
Intel due core e6750 2.66ghz (OC 3.0Ghz)
Ocz 2GB DDR3 1800Mhz Ram
1000w enermax galaxy PSU
1x500GB Sata Samsung spinpoint HDD
2xDvd Rewriters Sata
Windows Vista 64Bit home premium
Nvidia forceware 169.25

I cant seem to run 3dmark so ive been using windows score and unreal tournament as a rough guide for any preformance gains i was scoring 5.9 windows now im getting 3.6
and yes ive uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers many times

to my knowledge the 7900 is better

the main reason the 8 series was released, again to my knowledge was mainly for DX 10 benefits

so i think you have actually downgraded yourself

then again this is the 8800 which has a very high reputation, hhhhmmmm, ill have a quick surf mate as im not sure of the complete specs of either card

Gosh, that's a strange damned problem which I cant fully help you with. Well, you doubted about your PSU in the first place. But that's kinda waste of time. Becose a 500watt PSU would be powerfull enough to. I really put alot of question marks behing your current PSU. Becose its way to powerfull. It's alot of lost energy and a highly monthly fund.

But you might delete your current drivers. Just locate the map "NVIDIA" on your (C) partition. And delete it. Or get into control panel "delete programs" and delete the NVIDIA drivers in the list.

Then go to the NVIDIA site and re download the drivers.

I cant really think about any other solution about your current problem.

BTW The 8800GT is much better then the 7900GT. DX10 is not the only reason. DX10 gives more eye candy. But also asks more graphicall power. There are games like gears of war who support DX10 on highest settings. And i have a 8800GTS and I get 40 - 50FPS in that game on highest settings with DX10. I doubt the 7900GT coud handle that.

Furthermore there are alot of benchmarks. And they say the 8800GT has a better feat then the 7900GT. Much better actualy.

there seem to be mixed feelings about the 7900gtx and 8800gt

but summed up there should be higher performance in the 8800gt

whats the fps changes in unreal tournament as a guesstimate?

Deleted everything to do with nvidia and then reinstalled it all i done this twice. However i did notice after installing the first time it popped up saying this program did not install correctly which there was no reason for it to do this except i didnt do the restart straight after install. anyway i got same result

check the bios. you maybe actually be running the pci-e slot at a lower speed than it is intended to run at. sometimes motherboards come with some strange stock settings.

or it might even be that your 8800gt is faulty. if i were you, i would check up on the bios and make sure everything there is in order. and as a final resort to see if it solves the problem, send back your current 8800 and exchange it for a new one.

there is no reason for the 8800 to be lagging so badly. the 7900 is not better. it is simply a good card from an older generation. the 8800 has more pixel pipelines, and a higher bandwidth, and allows for a huge boost in performance over a lot of other cards out there.

so statistically it is better. but that doesn't mean the manufacturer made it perfectly.

just as a side note...what manufacturer made your 8800? asus? leadtek? BFG tech? evga? pny? there are a lot of brands out there. the best ones are BFG tech and evga. if you bought another brand, that means it is more likely to come to your door faulty straight out of the box.

I have had a little nose around the bios already one setting that i not to sure about is PEG Force x1 disable of enable, not sure what put its under my chipset settings under PEG port the Manuel is not the most helpful on that bit.

Funnly enough its a BFG. i was starting to think about sending it back i think ive done everything i can do, ill have another look at the bios if nothing ill send it back but cheers everyone trying to help.
