Ok, well first I will say I might not like the answers you people give me, but I'm going to ask anway.

For my new build I bought a 8800GTX card (it was on offer for about £160 rarther than £200 and I was going to get it anyway) But I have now been wondering whether or not it was a good idea. Should I have gone for a 9800GTX? or even an ATI? Or maybe even a 9800 GX2? And now after seeing the post by the newsbot, I now wonder if I should have just waited a bit longer and got one of those cards. And I was going to go SLI with another 8800GTX when I could afford a second card, and when I get Vista.

Again, I might not like the answer you lot give me, so forgive me if I get annoyed.

Thanks

I'm no expert on GFX cards but I'm pretty sure the cards newsbot posted about are not out, and when they are they will be seriously expensive.

Yea, sorry, I wasn't clear in my post, i should have said got one of those new cards when they came out. But yes, they probably would be way to expensive, and according to tomshardware, the 8800GTX is in the same "teir" as the 8800 ultra, and the 9800GTX only under the 9800GX2, so I think from that it's ok, but I wanted people's ideas on the matter.

I honestly think the 9xxx series is somewhat of a joke. I mean, the performance isn't what I'd call an astounding leap. and the price for them is outrageous. with no real competition from ATI, Nvidia has no real reason to make more powerful cards but still want more money. the way i see it, then send out a card with a 4 digit number starting with 9 to make more money. i dont like ATI, but they need to get back in the game to stop the mini monopoly.

No, it wasn't. The G92 8800GTS is a much better card, if not in power than in heat and noise issues.

None of those. The 9800GTX is, as stated above, a joke, ATI has nothing on the high-end nVidia cards, and the 9800GX2 is even more of a joke.

Nobody knows at this point whether it's going to be a failure like the 98xxs or not.

I wouldn't bother. AFAIK SLI allows you to match different cards, but if you have a lower-memory card they'll both be treated as if they have the lower-memory. For example, plugging in a 8800GTS or 8800GT would bring you down to 512mb on each card. Unless you're running at an insane resolution, that shouldn't be a problem. So if this new generation is a flop, go ahead and plug in one of those cards.

Man who cares about heat and noise?
We wants the POWA!!
The 8800GTX is a great card
I paid way too much for it when it first came but I dont regret it.
If I were you though I would definitely have bought the 8800GT.

What resolution will you be gaming at? The GTX will be useful at higher resolutions, at lower resolutions it will make no difference.

well currently I have 2 1280*1024 monitors, however I will shortly (after I have everything else) be buying a larger (probably 24" plus) monitor.
