whether it's the best to buy is debatable. but i'll admit that it's a very tempting purchase. HOWEVER! being that it's such a new addition to the repertoire of nvidia, it's going to fly off the shelves faster than the 8800gt did if i can predict the average user's actions correctly. there are more than likely going to be a ton of 8800gt cards sitting on the shelves, and all the 9600s will be gone. but at least that's not necessarily a bad thing considering the 8800 has the edge performance-wise anyhow.

Didn't nVidia do something similar right when they introduced their 8 series?

I remember the 8600 coming out and a friend of mine bought it right up and then a couple months later the 8800's came out.

my question is, would it be worth it to wait until the 9800's come out before buying say a 9600 or using an existing 8800GT sli rig?

Probably but if you're in the market for a 8800GT right now you might as well go for it. Remember: we're still waiting on the new generation of video cards. This is just a cheaper 8800GT.

im glad this brought a bit of discussion guys and all civilised. but to be honest ive got an asus 8800gts 640mb which was the best at that time so i got it, then another card comes along, then another and before youve finished crysis your card is "out of date " so when anew card comes out i think your going to be a bit skeptical especially as older cards than the 9600 can do the job just as well

The 8 generation was (is) pretty awesome in that the 8800s could all pretty much perform at the same (very good) performance level. That's why the "budget" 8800s are such a good deal, because they all tend to hover around the same benchmark speeds.

Just 9xxx in general. You could go ahead and call this the 8700GT[S] if you wanted, there's nothing ground-breaking "9600" about it.

The lineup right now is sort of like this:

8500
8600GT
8600GTS
8700GT (current 8800GS)
8700GTS (current 9600GT)
8800GS (the older non-G92 8800GTS)
8800GT
8800GTS
8800GTX

i just realized something incredibly saddening...

i'm going to need at least 500 dollars if i want the 8800 OR the 9600...300 for a new monitor, and 200 for the card. i only JUST noticed that it has only DVI connections. and i've nothing but VGA. i've currently got 10 dollars to my name...it's going to be a LONG time before i get either one. bummer...

The cards come with DVI -> VGA adapters, and even if they didn't, I'd send you one of mine :p

I also got BOTH of my LCDs for under $300..exaggerating a bit? hehe

well see, the way i reasoned it out was this:

i'm currently using a piece of crap flat screen. one of those huge ones from a few years ago. it's 13 inch, and has the picture quality of a finger painting. and i've been meaning to get a nice flat panel for a while now. and i figured if i was going to buy one, it'd be a nice one, so i set my sights high for my own purposes. i'm not saying it's going to be universal for everyone.

the one i was looking at was a 300 dollar samsung 22inch 2 millisecond response time. that's the 300 dollars there. if you can find me a high quality one that's got the same specs for under 300 bucks, by all means. i've limited my search lights to newegg though. i was a bit lazy with looking up a nice one somewhere else.

that's why i said 500 dollars. at least 200 for the 8800, and another 300 for said monitor. so in MY case, at least 500 total. i'm sick of using hand-me-downs that weren't nice in the first place.

Anything under 5ms is fine. You will see absolutely no difference between 2ms and 5ms.

I see 19" LCDs on NewEgg for $150 daily. Three inches is not a big deal, especially when you could get two and double your screen size anyway. The only difference I could think of is a higher resolution.
