resolution is very nice. i fully intend to play games at the best resolutions the GT and my monitor can pump out and still maintain good frame rates. after all, i went into my build with the intention of decking it out with some of the best parts out there. and so far so good. all i need now are those two things.

what i'm looking for is some of that sort of...shock and awe kind of thing. i want to look at my setup and feel like..."damn...that was some money well spent". i've always drawn the short straw when it came to nice hardware, games, gaming consoles...everywhere i go, someone has like....a 26 inch or a 30 inch black flat panel sitting around, and all i get to do is run to the end of my chain and bark. now i finally have a setup that i can call my gaming console...my entertainment center. and i want it to bloody well look like one. see where i'm coming from?

anyways...since i'm getting a job over summer, i'll hopefully have them both within the coming 6 months. but that's still a long ways off.

on the plus side, there might be a new card out by then, and it might also be within my price-range. namely the new addition the 9xxx line. and by the time i get the money i need, it'll be even cheaper.

meh the 8800GTS is basically the same thing and gets around the same scores in 3dmark!

true but for how long i wonder as the cards not yet finished, then as soon as it is and released no doubt someone else will do an overclocked version then the various gs. gt, gts, gtx, turbo etc, by untold amount of different companies, each one confusing us more and making us bang our heads against the wall choosing which one, then we buy a card, only to find one a week later thats cheaper but just as good.

These cards have the same chip as the 8series! there is no new technology here, all they are is well tweaked G92 chips, maybe pushing out a little more power, in my mind the only reason these cards are being released is because there is no competition from AMD/ATI so they will released these series of cards now to sell to the common market/less knowledgeable people

There is no point in buying one of these or any of that series in my eyes as they will be overpriced and a waste of money, considering power/performance of the 8series

yes that is true about ati even though they dropped the price, and i agree, as i said earlier the only way i can see them moving these cards is to lower the price, however ive also heard that there going to use a vapourchill on some of the top end cards, which by all accounts is very superior to the norm cooling by air so they may get some very nice timings out of it, and id be interested to see the results.

That's exactly why anything from the 9 series below existing 8xxx prices is good, though: not only do they offer nearly the same performance, they drive prices to the bottom. The 3800 series just got a price cut, for example.

i dunno guys. the 9600 is fairly decent considering the fact it uses way less power then the 8800gt does, and it achieves performance that's within a few frames of the 8800. what few frames the 8800 DOES get over the 9600 are negligible at best. they were usually maybe 3 or 4 at most no matter what game. and in a few games, the 9600 beat the 8800. you're downplaying that card's performance a bit much. considering it achieves that with half the stream processors that the 8800 has, that's pretty damn amazing. and it's way cheaper than the 8800.

you're absolutely right when you say that these cards don't bring about a marked performance INCREASE. but you're wrong when you say that the 9600 is a piece of s***. i've read the reviews, and i've checked the benchmarks. and quite frankly, it's far more tempting right now than the 8800 now that i've looked into it some more. i'm considering abandoning the idea of going after the 8800 in favor for this card just because of the aforementioned.

Yeah, I changed my mind, essentially anything based on G92 (even G94 w/ larger VRAM) is going to be a good deal. I'm still not too happy about there being so many midrange cards based on the same chipset, though, it's just silly. I'm also surprised they didn't go the "reduce-die" way rather than the "two GPU" way on the 9 series. It would have been amazing if we had 45nm GPUs, but I guess nVidia just doesn't have those factories and Intel isn't going to let them use 'em. Still, with all the cash nVidia's raking in being on top of the market, it seems silly we aren't seeing those sort of GPUs.

You'll also see a probable increase in frames compared to the 256MB 8800gt at higher res, as well, so that's another thing the 9600GT has going for it.

going with what you just said, i think we can pretty much sum it up in one real way. what we're looking for right now is something that has the power to render Crysis with amazing frame rates even at the best detail level. it would be WONDERFUL if we could finally have a gpu capable of yielding framerates above 50 on settings like that, but it looks like we're going to have to wait a while unfortunately. until then, i'm going to settle with either the 8800 or 9600 depending on my cash flow. plain and simple.
