Heyup,

Does anybody know if any of the current graphics cards are likely to be seriously processor-limited at 1440x900 by an A64 x2 5600+ processor? Incidentally, the ram is 2gb size transferring at 3GB/s. Is that likely to be a limiting factor as well?

Shouldn't be, 5600+ is slow but not that slow. Pop a 4770 in or something and you should get your money's worth.
