Hi, I have a (rather crappy) Gateway GT5220 that I upgraded to 3gb ram, and I am looking for a new graphics card. The CPU is rather slow, so I want to get a graphics card that will be as fast as possible, without the CPU holding it back.

Is this even possible? Or do i need a new CPU (or new computer)?

I mostly use my computer for photoshop and WoW, i tried to play F.E.A.R. but it was more like a picture than a game...

Thanks for any help!

Games are highly GFX card dependent over anything else.

Would help if you said what CPU and GPU you have currently.

Yeah, definitely get some form of graphics card, thats the reason FEAR was a powerpoint to you, onboard graphics are designed to show windows and thats about is usually.

What clock speed is the CPU? Usually in GHz like "2.4GHz"

as far as i know, Athlon 64 are not bad and actually pretty good still depending how old it is. The unplayable FPS in FEAR is'nt caused by your CPU, My CPU is far worst than yours since its a Socket 478 but i have a 7600GT and i can still achieve high FPS in FEAR, My laptops CPU is far better than my PC's CPU but my 7600GT outperforms it cos' my laptop have intergrated graphics (GMA X3100) which make FEAR near to unplayble FPS (13 -19 FPS). Some suggestions are check what slot you have availible in your MoBo, PCI-E is by far the best (Cheap and Good), If its AGP its not the end of the world, you can still get X1950 or HD 2600 or 7900GT for about £60 or $100 which are still very good performers. But if your unlucky and have PCI you can still get a 6200 from ebay cheaply which achieves playable FPS in most 2 years or older games. Hope i helped

If he has an old AGP setup or PCI then just get a new computer. It's not worth upgrading an old one to its best hardware and still not being able to play the latest games properly.

If you want to get a new gfx card, i reccoment u get the cpu to match it otherwise your going to be in a really tough spot. Games are heavily dependant on GFX, CPU & RAM.

On another unrelated and unimportant note: i just heard one of my harddrives shutting down because it wasn't in use. the sound is pretty cool.
