How old is the card? If it has a fan it cold be clogged with dust stopping perform and thus it is overheating. Remove your case and have a peek, then clean it out with a good blow and a paint brush if needed.

Had the graphics card out over the weekend when i installed a second hard drive and gave it a good clean and still have the problem. The GPU temperature is 55 normaly and goes up to 68 when playing games, the CPU is running at 44 and 48.

Temperature is alright, that leaves the only possible culprit for as dead video memory. No way to fix this other than a new card. Sorry.
