| Hi I currently have a Radeon 9200 Series graphics card (not sure exactly which model) with VGA and DVI-D outputs I need to run two VGA monitors. Now wikipedia tells me that DVI-D is digital only, does this mean I can't run two VGA's or that I need a scalar of some description. If it is as simple as an adapter do you know where I could buy one as I seem to only be able to find DVI-I to VGA versions. Many Thanks in advance Cougar |

The D-sub (so named because it resembles a 'D') 9 pin connector on the card sends an analogue signal. DVI-D is a digital signal-sender that also sends audio. Not all DVI connections send audio, hence the D on the end. You'll need a DVI-Dsub connector should one of your monitors have a Dsub plug on the end of the communication cable.

| Having read up on D-SUB / VGA connectors and DVI connectors the pin outs suggest that the 4 pins that are not included on a DVI-D connector are Analogue Video Red, Analogue Video Green, Analogue Video Blue and the horizontal Sync. Now as I understand it these are the important signals for an VGA connection. Having been unable to find an adaptor makes me assume that they don't exist at least not in high enough usage to warrant many people selling them. Now I have little doubt that the card is capable of running two VGA monitors as it would be silly for ATI to do so given that the card is a minimum of 3 years old and even now the number of digital monitors are limited. But it would not be the first time a company did something silly or invented a new standard for pin outs now. |

| Are you trying to hook this card up to literally 2 VGA monitors Couger or any VGA monitors for that matter?

| he is right there are two DVI standards i and d. The i standard has four pins extra over the d, which is Digital only. They are a few options to get a dvi-d connector to VGA but most are more expensive than a new monitor. Either replace the card or get a new monitor. Quite a few people have fallen into the same trap trying to go HDMI - DVI - VGA, it can't be done with simple plug-for-plug adaptors. |
