Default DVi vs. VGA connectors

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but what is the main difference between DVI & VGA connectors? My understanding is that VGA is analog, while VDi is a digital signal. Is this correct, and if so, how come so many notebooks do not come with DVI outputs?

You're correct DVI connectors do send a digital signal, they allow a tft screen to refresh itself how it's designed to; progressively. VGA, or analogue, will only allow an analogue, or interlaced, refresh.

Notebooks generally come with VGA because they've only got limited room on the chassis for ports and people tend to want more usb connectors, firewire etc. As a VGA connector is physically smaller than a DVI this usually gets the nod.
