Ive got a game called oblivion and the recommended gfx card is GeForce 6800 or higher (or ATIs equivalent). But what exactly is higher?

When i first looked at it i thought, "easy, its just any card with a higher number" eg 7200 or 7600, etc, etc.

Then i looked at it closely and i noticed that just because its a later model or has a higher number doesnt mean that its better. I looked at the specs of these cards and noticed that some of the older GeForce 6 models were better performers than the newer 7 series (ranking them by fillrate) ... What gives?

How do i distinguish a better card? was i right by using fillrate? How do i choose?

But sometimes it also means that some features are available ! like required pixel sharers stuff like that doesn't that mean higher model is compatible in any case ?

To be honest the isn't a definitive answer or rule to it.

There are 1000's of different cards, games, PCs and specs.

Read reviews, compare specs with other cards and get the best you can afford.

Most games will run on older, poorer kit, albeit at a reduced detail setting.

No, you cannot only judge a graphics card based on its fillrate. These days, newer graphics cards are coming with GDDR3 memory, which ofcourse can't be matched by any older graphics card with a higher amount of memory. And this was just one example. There are various other aspects like architectural differences as well as pixel pipeline differences which are to be kept in mind. Thats how you match a graphics card. Hope it helps.

Nearly all cards have GDDR3 in this day a age
GDDR4 is out for some time now
