Default Graphics card compatability?

I recently had some trouble with my ATI Radeon 9250 256mb agp card, so decided to buy a nvidia 7600gs 256mb agp card. Uninstalled ati drivers and software and installed new card as per instructions.

Card worked fine for a few days, but then started intermittent problems, ie. computer would freeze and would require reboot, or monitor would switch off (no video input) and require reboot.Downloaded latest drivers and installed, no good.

I checked the usual, virus, malware etc. to no avail. I then backed up my files and reformatted hdd and did a clean install of xp pro. Install went fine, but problem persisted on computer usage, simply opening a folder could cause it.

I decided the card was faulty and had it replaced, new card worked fine for a day, then same problem arrises. Next I thought the power supply couldn`t cope so I bought an x-power 700 watt psu, problem still persits.

Computer runs fine on onboard graphics, although there a few things they cant cope with.

Could this be a compatability issue?
Mobo is Asus A7S8X-MX
Processor is AMD Sempron 2Ghz socket A
Ram is 1Gig DDR

I have never heard of the "x-power" PSU and believe that's your problem. Never buy cheapo PSUs.

The one which I replaced is an EZ-Cool 400w, have you heard of these?

your 400watt should easily handle that card

give the insides of the the fans and the entire base unit a good clean with some compressed air from a can or a brush

could be overheating

Not necessarily, if they're crappy cheap PSUs they won't be able to deliver enough amps on the rails that matter. Some cheat and put amps on useless rails to boost their wattage sums.

You have tried 2 different graphics cards and 2 PSUs.
I suggest testing the memory with Memtest.

Forgot to mention that to
I have two sticks of ram and tried each stick on its own, but didn`t help.
Might give memtest a go anyway, but the thing is, computer runs fine on onboard graphics, should this not eliminate the ram?

I'm still going to stick to the PSU idea. If your PSU is not putting up enough amps on the 12V rail(s) it will strain to run everything and eventually crash/freeze, but when you remove your card, you take off that extra requirement and so your computer runs fine.
