hey,
i was originally going to get a 9800GT, but then i saw the HD4830, and i've read a few reviews and comparisons on the two cards, but i am still at a loss of which to go for. while the 4830 is ahead in some areas the 9800GT is ahead in others. the cards are within AU$8 of each other.

any help would be really appreciated.
thanks

The 4830 beats the 9800GT with a tire iron, quite honestly. It's a much better card, I'd be willing to bet any benchmarks you found are heavily overclocked 9800GTs.

There's going to be a heavy price drop on 4850s and 4870s pretty soon though so you might wait and see if you can't get the 4850.

do you know if the price cuts will reach Australia? and if so will the price of the 4850 drop to $125 US or less?

come to think of it the reviews were with oc'd 9800GTs (700mhz core i think)

It is supposed to be $130 US, rebates usually pop it to $40 or so under what the MSRP is.

Right now, ATI's cards are more bang for your buck.
Get the ATI.

PS; an overclocked 4670 will take on a 9800GT, so yeah, the 4830 is going to spank it.

ive decided to get the ATI.

but i have one last question. am i correct in thinking the only difference between the 4850 and 4870 is the core and memory clocks. and if my assumptions are correct could a 4850 be overclocked to equal a 4870's performance?

The 4870 uses GDDR5 and the 4850 uses GDDR3.
So no matter what, the 4870 will be faster at the same speeds.

okay, final question.

is the 4850 worth AU$50 more than the 4830?

or should i save the money and overclock the 4830?
