Whats with laptop screens nowadays?!?!

I was chatting wih my uncle a while ago who was asking about my new laptop, he said something about a matt finish screen which was really reflective. I didn't really know what he was on about but now i have my new laptop next to some old ones i've noticed it. The new one looks like glass and reflects like glass whereas the older ones have a kind of 'frosting' effect so it isn't as reflective... what's all that about?! does anyone else know what i mean or am i just crazy?!
