Default Monitor Keeps Auto Configging!

Hi everyone

My sister has come over for xmas and brought her PC for me to fix!! She stated that when moving files from folder to folder, like pictures from her camera folder to my documents folder, for example, the monitor would just freeze on a black screen then the auto config sign would flick up and all would go back to normal!! This was happening but the PC had also started rebooting instead of auto configing!! I formatted and re-installed windows xp SP2 and this seemed to work until i trasnfered some files from a disk in my documents, it rebooted again. I checked all settings on graphics card and monitor and lowered the refresh rate from 60 MHZ to 59 MHZ, this seemed to work but iv turned it back on this morning to install the rest of the programs i removed and it just kept rebooting again!! I built this PC for her about 10 months ago and all has been fine up until about 2 months ago when the problem started. Her system is as follows:

Asus M2V Mainboard
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHZ CPU
1 GB Elixir Ram
Inno 3D GF-7100GS 256Mb PCI-E Grpahics Card
Acer AL1916W Monitor running at 1440 * 900 & 59Mhz refresh rate.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 fully up to date

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated as it is doing my head in and she keeps pestering me to fix it so I cant play COD 4 at the moment!!!

Thanks in advance

Default Monitor Keeps Auto Configging!

Hi Thanks for that.

I have run Antivir and it has reported back no viruses/spyware etc. I have cleaned all fans, I gave the PC a spring clean before reinstalling windows so cant be this. I have changed from the Acer monitor to a spare Cibox 19" LCD and it does the same!! With regards to the overheating problem I haven't heard any beeps or anything to let me know that the temp has reached or gone above the threshold temp, are there any monitoring programs, freeware!!, that show all the temps so I can see if this is causing the reboots?

regards

It doesnt say auto config but will flicker for say 4 seconds to black then back to desktop, then other times it just freezes and reboots, I opened IE earlier on and it crashed when i pressed to maximize it, I let it reboot and tried again and it did the same, yet if the window is small you can drag it with mouse and fly it round your screen and it only pauses for a millisecond every like 12 seconds!! Ill try speedfan and let you know the temps.

Cheers
