Hey all,
I'm having some trouble with my monitor. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 22 inch, and it has stopped working. I came home today, woke my pc up from sleep mode, and the resolution was very large. If I moved the mouse to the top of the screen, the screen moved up, if I moved the mouse to the bottom, it moved down, etc...I have never seen this before. So, I tried configuring the resolution in Control Panel, and it gave me a choice of about 30 different resolutions (normally theres only like 5)...so I tried sliding it back to my original and it wouldn't work. It stayed at the same resolution and asked me if I wanted to keep the settings. So, next I tried restarting the machine, now the monitor seems pretty much dead, its like its not getting any kind of signal at all from the computer no matter what I do. I have an 8800GT, Windows XP Pro... I hooked a small 15 inch spare monitor I had up to the machine to see if it worked, and it's working fine. I also tried plugging the other monitor in with this one to see if my Nvidia software would detect it, and it did not. Nor could it find it in a scan. I don't know what to do, the monitor just shows scanning through "Digital" and "Analog" in the top left, trying to pick up a signal, and when it fails, it just shows a box that says "Check Signal Cable - ANALOG" Any help please? I have a lot of work to get done tonight, and I won't be able to do it without the monitor so quick responses are greatly appreciated. |

Sounds to me like the monitor has gone bad.

Power the monitor off. Count to ten. Power the monitor back on. Reboot. If you can see the POST screen then the monitor's fine and you can get it back by adjusting the operating system controls, otherwise the monitor needs repair.

Nope, your all wrong.
Your PC has 'forgot' your graphics card. You need to plug the monitor back into the onboard VGA/DVI port, and re-install the graphics card entirely. The reason the screen 'moves' when you move the pointer and why you are getting loads of different resolution options is because the computer doesn't know what the external GPU can handle dimension-wise. Just do as i have said, and it will be fine. (I know this because my friend had this happen to him.) =) |

I'll remember that one, that's good.
eta: I just re-read what I wrote and I think I agreed with you in it. |
