Ok here's the setup:
9400GT - 2 DVI-I's, one goes with no problems to a DVI-D + HDCP monitor.
Second one goes to an adaptor to VGA, which plugs directly into the other monitor (which I'm really annoyed with because it was misdescribed on the site, it's an older version ...

Second one goes to an adaptor to VGA, which plugs directly into the other monitor (which I'm really annoyed with because it was misdescribed on the site, it's an older version of the same model as my other one, so it has VGA "D-SUB" not DVI. The PC recognises it's there (I have options for it in nVidia CP etc.) but the monitor just says "No Signal" and goes blank. I presume this is because it's VGA, and the card isn't outputting an analogue signal? But, I can't find options to change it anywhere. Thanks for the help. My System: FordyPC

Try this.
Right click desktop, Properties. Settings. Select the second monitor, and tick box 'Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor'. |

Tried that already.
It's all set up for it on the PC end of things, ie. The PC thinks it's working and sending the signal. I now have it working with a DVI - VGA adaptor in the GPU and a crappy VGA lead to the monitor, which works but for a few wierd reasons I want to have Decent DVI lead to DVI - VGA adaptor in the monitor. (Although it's obviously a different adaptor as it's female/male rather than male/female) |

It's probably just that the monitor or card didn't like the adaptor you were using before. But..... Honestly, there is no difference between your new way of doing it that works, and the DVI lead way. The weakest like will always be the VGA lead, and it doesn't matter where you down convert, it'll still be the same on the monitor. Secondly, I doubt you would ever possibly be able to tell the difference between the two resolutions. ![]() Basically, forget about it and enjoy!

Yeah, my main issue is that I don't like the look of the crappy generic VGA lead, the DVI lead I wanted to use was higher quality, and surely retains slightly better quality, not that any of what I just said would make that much difference.
Oh well.. I guess at some point I'll have to replace both of them anyway, and when I do I'll make double sure the seller actually doe sell me the right version!

For the second time , it doesn't matter where you step it down to VGA, it can only be one quality. Either VGA or DVI. Having a long DVI lead and a short VGA lead is exactly the same as a long VGA lead and a short DVI lead.
