it seams like a very obvoius choice, but I just have to make sure.

GTX280
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814500052

or GTX285
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130442

which one is better? they are only $5 off. The GTX285 is faster right?

if the GTX285 is faster then- "I though so"
if the GTX280 is faster then- "well, its a good thing i asked"

sorry for what seems like a very n00by question, but I felt i better ask just to make sure.

really? hmm. weird. I hate it when they give a new card a higher number in the name and its turns out to be slower. if i were to OC the GTX285 would it be faster?

Logically the 285 should be faster then the 280 however it really depends on what they actually improved between the 2 versions. I would normally go for the newer version personally as they are normally better

the GTX285 uses 55nm technology, uses 2x 6 pin power cables (apposed to the 1x 6pin and 1x 8 pin on the GTX280), is more efficient, and makes less heat, and (supposedly) can OC better. but is it worth my extra $5? lol.

Check out the reviews for the 2. $5 is not much of a risk. I would go for the newer one as the cards shouldn't get worse only better

I don't know why you would buy the 285 just to overclock it when the other one is faster by default. The power issue is moot with a decent PSU, and the heat issue is moot with a decent case.

Likewise, I cannot understand people buying the 285.

Just get the 280 and be happy.

Or just go for the 295gtx, although I understand it's a bit more expensive so not really worth it. Between those two I can see the 285 outperforming the 280 possibly with more developed drivers but at the moment definitely the 280.
