Hey, I'm not sure if this is really a hardware problem software problem, or a driver problem, but from researching the nvlddmkm message, lots of people are saying that its either the graphics card, RAM or the latest driver installed on the computer

I have the nvidia GeForce 8600 gt graphics card and last week it started off with the message that "nvlddmkm failed and recovered" something along the lines of that. Then a new thing started where the screen would sort of tint purple and then the computer would completly shut down. Until a few days ago the computer would not boot to desktop. At BIOS there would be green blocks on the screen and when Vista would load there would be green wave lines going across the screen, and since then I can't even get to the user accounts screen.

However I am able to reach the desktop on safe mode and the green wave lines are still visible. This had convinced me that it is the graphics card

Other Specs:
Quad Core 2.4ghz
3gb RAM
Vista Home Premium x32
250gb hardrive
nvidia geforce 8600gt
dell inspiron 9200?

Help would be greatly appreciated

Hardware, if it's having that problem in the BIOS.

Easiest thing to check is for overheating - clean the fan. Overheat can cause artifacts.

Otherwise, your VRAM's gone south.

Hi,

If you are not sure hardware or software errors, you can use the PC test card to test your whole mainobard hardware for any faulty and error part quick first.

Uhm i thought it was that the computer wasnt clean, so i got almost all the dust out and i thought that fixed the problem because computer was running well for a while, until an hour later it shut down again because of the problem and since then i cant book to desktop only in safe mode

if my VRAM is busted how do i check if it is? and that would mean i need a whole new graphics card or ...?

have you got an onboard gfx card too? If you do, try taking your 8600 out and just using the onboard card and see if it still crashes. If you don't have an onboard gfx card, have you got a spare (or a friend's that you can borrow) gfx card, that you can replace it with temporally to check?

im not sure if i have a onboard gfx card, and spare? doubt i could get my hands on one anytime soon

if it is my graphics card though, i think I have call dell during this week i think i had one year on parts or somethin and see if they could replace my graphics card, but I still have to check if its 100% that its the card/cards VRAM that is busted

if i opened my computers case would I be able to see if theres a gfx card ?

my computer finally and once again loaded to desktop, but im sure the problem is still not solved
its only a matter of time before the purple tint comes back and my computer shuts off

anyways, ive tried testing the vram but im not quite sure if im doing this correctly, or if it will show any error if the computer has loaded to desktop with ease all of a sudden, which poses another question for me, why all of a sudden did the computer load to desktop and yesterday and day before it could not?

this is just too frustrating, hopefully someone has the answer to this problem before i replace my graphics card

If you haven't opened the case do it now and check for dust and lint. Most of the time artifacts are caused by overheating. That's an easier solution than getting a new graphics card.

Ive already said i believe that i cleaned it out, i did clean for dust and said that it improved my performance for only a short while and the computer went back to messing up again

also I found a program that tests for these artifacts and so far its been running over an hour and half and no artifacts so i really REALLY don't know whats wrong, but i am almost positive that it will mess up soon or overnight.

I'll leave it on overnight to see results, if its fine, and fine for the next few days i think i might stick with the graphics card, unless its better to call dell and let them know?

well..ill post the progress tomoro thanks for help so far Carbon
