i tried to overclock my 7600gt using two different programes and was very unsuccesful. my computer crashed everytime raising both gpu and memory slightly, sometimes if it wasnt overclocked too much my card would recover, but it would be stable. is the 7600gt well known for overclocking?

What were the two programs used?

Do you have an Nforce motherboard?

It could also be down to the psu you have. Wattage? Brand? You may not have enough headroom on your psu for oc'ing.

Lastly, overclocking is dependent on the individual chip, not the brand, not the model, but the chip you have on your card.

Just because another cpu/gpu might overclock tremendously, it doesnt mean yours will. Unfortunately thats the nature of the game.

I think I remember you saying that you had a laptop?
If so it is very difficult to OC a laptop GPU
Also depending on what driver version you are using depends on the software you are able to use for overclocking
If you are using 94.xx (or earlier) series of drivers you will be able to use coolbits which is the best software for OCing your GPU
Ntune is very unstable
Rivatuner is powerful but deadly in the wrong hands
But like I said if it is in a laptop then it is going to be difficult anyway

Laptop?

Noooooo! Don't even attempt it. Laptop's chassis' are built to contain and get rid of the waste heat from a stock speed chip. Definately not an oc'd one.

Thats why you're having problems.
