Default PCI 2.0 vs PCI x16

Which one is "better" and if i buy a PCIe 2.0 card (an 8800GT for example) will it run and run well in just a PCIe x16 slot (like what will be on my mobo and what is making the mobo cheaper because it only has what i need:one slot.)?

i was just wondering because it seems as though the 2.0 slot has the ability to handle a better information transfer (faster) rate.

they're the same for the most part. BUT! you were right. the difference is the bandwidth offered, and the amount of power drawn from the socket. ....that being said, pci-2.0 is optimized for the latest graphics chips. so i would vote pci-2.0 is better than pci 16x. essentially pci-2.0 has doubled the speed, and increased the voltage taken in through the slot.

an 8800 will run just fine in pci 16x or pci 2.0. they're meant to fit the same socket. the subtle differences lie where i just explained. basically, the 2.0 is a nice thing to have. but you don't absolutely need it yet if you don't have it.

hope that clears up a few things.

defnitely i didn't want to spend the money on a mobo with the least amount of available PCIe 2.0 slots (which is 2 on newegg, and the cheapest ones were like 230 bucks) since i'm not a performance freak (meaning i'm not OCD about gettting every last drop out of my hardware and potentially ruining it and voiding my warranty in the process) so 16x is fast enough (and cheap enough :D) for me.
