Hi guys, you're probably as sick of my PC issues as I am but got one more

Wont make a colossal difference but my PCI-e lane holding my graphics card is running at 8x speed, rather than the 16x it's meant to..

Would I be able to correct this in the BIOS and have a 16x lane running at 16x or is it because my graphics card is in the secondary lane? Not keen on moving it to the first because I cannot remove the RAM when it is in the primary lane, being such a big card.

Any help on this would be great, thanks again guys!

It's going to be locked there because the secondary slot is physically not wired for x16 but there is statistically zero difference between x8 and x16. So don't worry about it.

(and the source on that is a benchmarking article I read on Tom's Hardware but it's down right now. :()

Does that mean then that an AGP card with all the latest stuff on it like GDDR5 and 45nm cores and such would run at the same level of performance? AGP runs at 8x speed which makes me think that that would be true..

Argh, lost my reply. "x8" doesn't mean anything because that only means there's 8 lanes that can carry as much data as the spec allows for. In PCI-E's case, it is not only built for scaling but data can be transferred simultaneously both ways through the link, and so PCI-E x8 can vary from nearly the same speed as AGP x8 (2.1GB/sec) to double it.

Anecdotally, most that buy the "up to date" AGP video cards like the 3850 are disappointed with their purchases: though this may be more to do with the CPUs on these boards being out of date as well.
