Do I go for the 8 series or the 9 series?

Also, my current card has to use a stupid adapter as it needs both 5v and 12v supplies but I would like a card that doesn't have this problem and either runs on 2 x 6 pin PCI-E's or the newer 8 pin PCI-E power connector.

Go nuts guys!

Wow, £130 for an 8600GTS, anyway, for that price I would get a 4850, will be a very large performance increase.

Thats why I deleted my other post, after reading yours again it wasn't relevant.

Still, right now I'd go 4850 or 4870.

If you are only interested in Nvidia, I would say a 9800GT, however if you can add in an extra £15, go for a 9800GTX+

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with the guides when threads like this pop up.

The "series" matters just as much as a car brand. In each series there are a range of cards typically varying from horrible to excellent back to horrible again.

The 216 core variant of the GTX 260 is good. The 9800GT is good. The 4850 is usually better depending on regional pricing.
