Hi, I have a emachines H6207
And i wanted to get a video card for it. Now the thing is I dont know which video card to get, all i kno is that the video card depends on the computer :S. I was wondering if anyone have a suggestion of which Video card i should get? My budget is around $100 give or take $10. any suggestions would be much appriecated :D and also if I need anything else to help upgrade my computer for gaming? so far I only bought a 512mb ram the rest are factory defualt. *Edit* I am thinking about "http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10098942&logon=&lan gid=EN" Thanks! |

eMachines are very much budget PCs. You likely have a low-end CPU, and I know you're running pretty old RAM (PC3200 isn't bad, it's pretty outdated though). It's quite unlikely this will ever be cost-effective rather than just buying/building an old one - you will likely need a new power supply and (possibly) CPU.
If you listed the _exact_ CPU you have, and whether you have a PCI express X16 slot (I can't find the motherboard on the web to check), we can go from there.

OK -
For the PSU, we have two rails at 15 and 16 amps, respectively. This is not too great. Try to find one with much higher amps on a single rail (where it says +12V), or higher on those two. There's 22 and 32 amps on the 3.3 and 5.0V rails - but this isn't really going to help you when your GPU's asking for current. If you need help with this let me know and I can find something. Sony drive is fine, of course. Almost all opticals you buy now will be fine. Note that that's an IDE drive, so if your motherboard has only one or two IDE slots, you won't be able to use any more IDE connecting peripherals (like hard disks). For ease of use/building, you might try looking for a SATA drive instead. That's way overpriced for a 8600GT. Right now, the 8600GT is a budget card, useful if you don't have more than $65 or so but otherwise outclassed. Unfortunately, it looks as if Tigerdirect is inflating the prices of all its graphics cards quite a bit. I recommend you drop something you don't need, like the CPU cooler, and go for one of the 9600GTs.. Trust me, it's a big jump. The memory is quite overpriced as well. For that price you should be getting 4GB. "SLI-ready" has nothing to do with memory - in fact, it's deceptive to even associate a graphics card technology with memory. Try this or this instead. My opinion of OCZ is falling quite a bit. Scrap the case fan - you are right that you would need a couple, but really any case you buy should come with them already. Motherboard is fantastic choice. Two PCI-E lanes for if you want to put another graphics card in later. However, if you're going a little more budget, anything based on the P35 chipset (as opposed to the 750i in the title) will be good too and a lot cheaper. Note, P35 motherboards only have one slot for graphics cards, so no SLI in the future. However, it may be better to get a better single graphics card instead of ending up SLIing two 9600GTs in the future. It's your call. This motherboard only has one IDE header too, so you may want to switch everything else over to SATA as it's highly likely your old hard drive is IDE. Scrap the CPU cooler - you won't need it. In fact, I'm willing to bet the stock cooler is better than that one. I would definitely upgrade from that Pentium D - for a tiny bit less you can get a far superior processor that blows it away. I'm not a big fan of the case. Not only does it not come with a lot of fans, it looks like it's made pretty cheaply and front audio not working is silly. I think that's it, so let's sum it up: 1. Switch your peripherals to SATA rather than IDE. Buy a Lite-On SATA DVD writer, for example, and a new SATA hard drive. 2. Change your case to a little bit better constructed one. 3. Possibly change your motherboard - the money you spend on it may be better suited to better components elsewhere. Consider a cheaper (~$120) P35 motherboard. 4. Change the processor, scrap the fan (you'll get one in the box) 5. Change the RAM to some cheaper kind 6. Change the video card to at least a 9600GT. What resolution are you running? 7. Slightly different PSU. I'm glad you've decided to just go out and build a new one. I think you'll be very happy with this as compared to your old eMachines :)

Thank you, now I tried to do what you told me and came up with this.

Not a bad job.
I'm pretty impressed that that PSU, despite coming from a manufacturer I've never heard of, claims to do two 28A 12V rails. Still, I'm suspicious. Case is good though. For the PSU, try this or better yet this. Those are solid PSUs. Optical is fine. Motherboard is mediocre at best - read some reviews on NewEgg. Try something like this. Good job finding a P35 though. RAM of course looks fine. Video card would be great if it was in stock! (THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE). But any other vendor's version of it will work fine.

That site is having a hell of a sale on graphics cards. All their 8800GTs are being cut to around $130. If you're buying soon, get this one or this one instead. The former has a better fan, the latter a little cheaper. I like the former one as it has a nice aftermarket cooler and is really cheap.
You will need a OS disk. That's really all you'll need to make it work software-wise. Once you get it up and running, you can use the disks that come with the hardware to get all the drivers up to date, or you can connect to the Internet and get the latest drivers. What will happen is when you plug this all in you'll get the BIOS, then it'll say something like "No operating system found", "Disk not ready", etc. You insert the disk, reboot or hit enter or whatever, and Windows will begin installing. Once it's done, do the above (driver installation) and you're done.

Yeah. You could also put a free linux distro or whatever on there but since this is a gaming PC I assume you'll want Windows.
Good luck, if you have any problems when you get the parts just let us know.
