Hello

I want to add a third monitor to my machine.

I have a Gigabyte p31-es3g
4GB Ram
Intel E5300 processor
Win 7

The current graphics card is a Gforce 9500GT 1GB (2 outputs)

My MB has only one PCIE16 slot so the second card would have to be PCI

I was thinking of adding one of these

PNY GeForce 8400GS 512MB

Will this work?

I'm getting conflicting infomation, some sites say you can simply add a grapics card, others say the MB must support it and it must be exactly the same as the other card.

Please help!!

Also my main reason for adding it is for office type workspace so if the extra grahics card is a no go, would a USB graphics adapter be a viable solution? I have seen these on the internet before (not great for games but supposed to be ok for office stuff).

Best wishes

As long as they use the same drivers (pretty much any nVidia card) as the 9500GT, they'll work together fine. You can probably find a lot cheaper PCI cards than that, though. An old 6xxx or 7xxx will work just as well - even a FX5200 would, I imagine, though I imagine the difference between it and another old PCI card like the 6200 would be too small to justify it :p

People talk at cross-purposes on this subject - when people say you need two of the same card, they've probably either misunderstood you, or they don't fully understand themselves.

What they're probably talking about, realise it or not, is SLi/XFire - where generally speaking you need the same card.

However when that's not your intent, then as Carbon says 2 modern nVidia cards will do just fine.

Hybrid SLi and Crossfire systems allow for the use of different cards, depending upon their model, age and bus type. AMD has a list printed of compatible set ups within the 4800 and previous series'. I assume nVidia will have the same list.

Hybrid SLi/Crossfire are largely useless gimmicks, I wouldn't factor them in at all for any video card purchase, especially because the OP isn't even gaming.

Upon reading his first post, I agree. He should use a splitter from Maxtor (I think) to solve his problem. That's assuming the OP ever comes back..
