I have just been given a 128MB Graphics card, after buying a DVI to VGA converter I installed it. But on booting up I get a blank screen (the monitor stays on standby), but the fan on graphics card spins up and the computer runs windows. Did I miss something? ...

The fan on card spins up, but the monitor just stays on standby and by the way there are no beeps or anything like that.

Either it's faulty or there is a dodgy connection through the DVI to Monitor.

Like I said before I am using a VGA adapter and I have been told that card does actually work (from to 2 trusted friends).

Well it can only be one of those two things, it either works or it doesn't regardless of what your trusted friends told you.

I do understand what you mean, but does the DVI to VGA adapter need to be pressed in quite tightly before I get a display on the monitor?

There are screws on the DVI adapter and VGA monitor plug, make sure they are done up properly.

Done that and checked that. Should I uninstall my present card drivers before installing this new card and its drivers?

It's hardware not software if the monitor doesn't even display in DOS/Post screens.
