£117 for the 9600gt ain't too bad considering its nearing 8800 quality

how much is postage on the card? just curious if you're better off money wise to get the 8800gt

anyway that aside, what psu do you have? 400 watt psu with 26amps on the 12v rails is suggested

have you check this card is going to fit in your base neatly etc

Why on earth to manufacturers still throw ram at a card that can't make use of it all.

Nope, stay away from that card.

The 256mb 8800Gt is pretty much the same money and has nearly double the power and will happily game at the native resolution of the monitor quoted.

Or if you cant stretch to the 8800GT then go for the AMD 3850.

I think they just do it as marketing ploy, some people probably buy memory over model. Gotta be a bit of an idiot though. And you'd think gamers would know the difference.... Mehh i think i just disproved my theory.

Edit - Reading this back i don't think this post makes sense.

I dunno Alex, >=1600 x >=1000 is usually the cutoff for me, anything over that I would be very hesitant not to go to 512MB. YMMV.

you might be on to something ;) Both in the "gamers should know the difference" and the "this post makes no sense."

Gamers ought to be able to know the difference. But gaming has become more and more "mainstream" i guess you could call it that people will go out and buy whatever is shiny and looks like it'll give them that "edge."

have you had a late night? I've been sick all day and took some nyquill an hour ago and i feel like passing out right now...can't focus on anything.

The bottom line is that the performance of this GeForce 9600 GT came as a pleasant surprise. Despite the chip having only 64 stream processors, 38% lower processing power, and 33% fewer transistors, gaming performance was only 12% below the 8800 GT on average. And it was even better than the 8800 GT 256 MB, by an amount ranging from 1% without antialiasing, up to 45% with it enabled. The 8800 GT 256 MB is greatly hampered by its 256 MB of memory, and these results mean that it is really no longer even worth considering! Meaning that it was an extremely good choice to put 512 MB of memory on the 9600 GT, even if that doesn't account for everything, since the 8800 GT has the same amount.

Looks like with VRAM, size does matter at this point. With AA on you have a 5fps drop average with the 9600 - so grab the 512MB 8800 if you can find it within £25, otherwise go with the 9600.

Dunno myself. All I can tell Robina is that I've gamed on a rig with an E6850/256mb 8800GT on Supreme Commander at 1680x1050 (206bw) and it wasn't an issue, not in the least. And with that cpu at that resolution any bottleneck would have been the gpu.
