Hi,
When I play games, after a few minutes the game freezes for 2-5 seconds, then the graphics go very weird. The colours change and its all pixelated. The most prominent colour is purple. I don't have a screenshot.(sorry) It usually happens with Team Fortress 2. I don't think my graphics card is overheating, because I quit right after the graphics screwed, and the temperature was on 56 degrees celcius. Could there be any other problem? Or is my card screwed?
Specs:
3ghz AMD X2 6000+
Nvidia 8600GT
3gb ram shown in system properties (but i have 4 sticks of 1gb in the computer)
It has happened before, but not as often as these few days.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: If you need me to play the game and see if it happens again, I might not be able to until the weekend, because I am still in high school, controlled by my parents, who do not permit me to play games on weekdays. I will however, be able to do tests like 3dmark etc.

Any of our replies will almost certainly require you to play it again, just so that it can be tested.

You could try lowering the resolution slightly, if the game permits it?

otherwise I don't know, as I play games on other platforms, but not PC, sorry.

Hope I help a bit :D

Does the gfx card have a fan? Is it blocked with dust and other crap?

Sounds like overheating to me.

Yes the card has a fan. I recently added some ram and cleaned out some dust while I was at it. I could recheck if you want. It should be pretty dust free now.
I can lower the resolution, but I won't be able to try yet.

Overheating or a dodgy PSU are the two possible causes here.

Okay. How do I find if I have a dodgy PSU? I did a video test which I downloaded here:
http://freestone-group.com/video-car...ility-test.htm
I got a benchmark result of 129, but according to their table here:
http://freestone-group.com/video-car...k-results.html
The 8600GT should be 141-240, which means my card is failing? The maximum temperature I saw while the test was running was 63 degrees celcius. I have heard of cards going up to 70's and 80's, so I don't think this is too hot.

I also forgot to add that there was lag after I close the game. There was also lag after I did the test above, and after a 3dmark test. Could this mean something?

Well, could be the VRAM too, but it's cheaper to get a new PSU unless you're still under warranty and it's more likely that.

The place I got the computer from has 1 year parts warranty and 3 years labor warranty. I got it in around March this year so I should be fine? And how do I know if the PSU is the bad part? How will they know if it's dodgy or not? Because I don't want to go there and come back after they say there's nothing wrong because they can't test it/don't know if it's faulty.

Then just tell them either the video card or PSU is screwed up and let them figure it out.

If they have the resources to give you a warranty they have the resources to narrow it down.
