Save your money or buy a larger monitor.

I already have a good monitor, and this is for my next build. i designated that much money for the build to go to a graphics card. lets just say I have already "saved up" my money.

Well then you're wasting your money.

1680x1050 is not a good resolution, and anything you upgrade to will show extremely low gains. Paired with the fact most of today's games run fine on even hopelessly outdated hardware, there's no reason to upgrade.

I don't know dollars, but probably either a 9800 GX2 or GTX 280. Then again, that'll depend on which version you get (there are quite a few pre-overcloked ones out there)

If all your interested in is the best, I would go for 2 of these in crossfire. price after rebate: $199.99 each, however it wouldn't be worth it with that monitor, it would be better spending to get one of those, and put the other $200 towards a monitor.

There has been a lot of problems with the 4650s / 4870s in Crossfire. I'd avoid them for now when thinking dual cards.

Have there? I hadn't heard of that, the few reviews I've seen (comparing 4870 crossfire against the 4870 x2 etc) it seemed to work fine, but maybe that was using beta drivers or something.

I agree with thingie2 those 4870's are a great choice, I think the driver issues are all sorted now so crossfire shouldn't be a problem
