so should i get the GTX280 or a 4870 1GB? the MOBO im getting IS Crossfire, so in the future if i wanted more performance all i would need was a 2nd 4870, but then again i was never really a big fan of dual cards anyway. what should i do?

The 4870 x2 is not also know as crossfired 4870's, the 4870 x2 has 2 GPU's on 1 PCB!!!

I would go for the 4870 as you are getting a crossfire motherboard and they scale pretty well in crossfire too

4870 has severe stutter problems reported across the board in crossfire configuration or X2 due to a bug with Catalyst AI and I can't recommend ATI on the super-high-end at all anymore.

I would say go for a 4870, I know Carbon disagrees about this because of stuttering with crossfire, but like you said cheesepuff, you aren't much of a fan of duel cards anyway, and by the next time you decide to upgrade, the drivers for crossfire will probably be fixed, and there will be cards that perform better than crossfiring a second 4870 anyway.
