Yesterday I was installing a wireless desktop card to my desktop PC and decided to give it a clean as it was filled with dust. I had never actually removed the heat sink and CPU before but felt it was time as the heat-sink was rather disgusting.
I removed the heat-sink as shown on many a youtube video. However it seems I may not have broken the seal between the processor and the heat-sink correctly as when i went to lift the heat-sink out of the computer the processor was still attached. I removed the CPU from the heatsink and inspected the pins as I thought that they may have broken. To my luck I noticed that all were still aligned correctly and there seemed to be no obvious signs of damage. I replaced the heat-sink and CPU without removing the thermal pad that was already applied to the heat-sink or without applying any new thermal paste. I noticed my computer running slowly and notice the CPU was very high so immediately turned my computer off. I have since taken apart the heat-sink and CPU and have removed the old thermal pad on both the heat-sink and processor with cotton buds, tissues and nail polish remover. I have also bought some new thermal paste and reapplied it (rice grain method)to the CPU. On turning the computer on I did realise that the computer was running as normal however the CPU seems to be jumping all over the place as shown in the images. I took the temperature of the CPU to see if it was to do with the new paste but as shown in the image the CPU seems to be at a reasonable temperature. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what may be the problem as I feel I may have damaged the CPU or the socket? Could be a driver problems with your network card, did you actually install it? If so, remove it and see if the usage % drops. If it doesn't we can work from there.

Thanks for the reply, fortunately everything sorted itself out after I left the machine running for 20 minutes. Must have been the thermal paste setting correctly.
