I have the AMD Phenom fx 3 8650 2.3ghz. processor installed in the ASUS M3A78-EM Motherboard. I applied Arctic silver 5 to the center of cpu heat spreader per directions from their website. what I have noticed, is sometimes according to the Probe 2 program which came with the board, the idle temps on cpu will sometimes be 40 to 41 degrees C. then other times will be 47 or 48. I have checked the room temps and made sure they were the same. Is this normal during burn in period of the Artic Silver 5? as well as other components or, is this pretty much just normal in general? I haven't reached any unusally high temps but, jus wandering about the ups and downs mostly. Thanks for any input!

I'd say that range is what you'd get between idle and loaded, I think you might like to run a process monitor and see what the load really is. I've not seen that much variation in a steady-state machine.

Hi, not quite sure what you mean by process monitor? Thanks! right now, while under load, it's running between 41 and 42 degrees C.

Task Manager / Processes shows what's using proportions of cpu time

http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/taskman.htm or something like it on Microsoft operating systems.

Hi, I checked task manager and also, found a program called process monitor which tells plenty way over my, head lol!. I noticed, AOL and, my Avast anti virus were both scanning the email so, I disabled that part in avast so, AOL can take care of the mail and that alone, seems to have made a difference. I will keep looking for things that may be running that are not needed. Thanks very much, for your help!
