The chipset basically the interface between the CPU and the Motherboard. Intel 775 means that it any motherboard that has socket 775 will work with that CPU

Well there is no best, the differences is their physical orientation, you try and stick the wrong socket CPU into a motherboard and its not going to fit without bending and breaking. Its the manufacturer way to make sure a compatible CPU is stuck into the motherboard

READ WHAT I SAID, Physical Orientation, look at the bottom of your CPU it has a bunch of metal pins, you know where the "chip" "sets" into the motherboard, with different chipsets they are different. The reason they need different chipsets is for compatibility between the CPU and the motherboard. Two CPU's with different Chipsets are designed differently. The best chipset since you cannot get that its not the important aspect of the chip, is the chipset with the best CPU on it. The best motherboard is therefore the best motherboard that fits with that CPU. Different technologies, different front side busses, just different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipset

There are many different CPU's with different sockets in a chipset. Most Used and common chipset is x86 basically all computers we use that chipset and most OS's are programed with that technology in mind

(that question may be very stupid or very obvious but as you can tell im not the brightest)
thanks

There is no compatability about it, the chipset is inside the CPU
