hey i have a sdram motherboard and i am noticing that most retailers are only selling ddr 2. im just wondering if there is any real big advantages to ddr 2 over sdram. i have been thinking about getting a new mother board but just now before that i was going to get another gb of ram and i was wondering if it is worth it or to save my money for ddr 2 ram when i get a new motherboard.

You sort of need to decide what you want your computer to do before you decide how to change it.

Why do you want to change it? What won't it do that you'd like to?

i is quite old and i am planning on getting one before the end of the year. i am using it for games just now and i am wondering if sdram is any good for this and if i should buy another gig of ram as i have 1gb and 256mb just now. also if it is worth saving to buy a bigger ddr2 ram when i get my new computer instead of buying another gig of sdram

What are your system specs ? and what games do you want to be able to play ?

If the mobo has sdram, it's likely it's got a small CPU and limited graphics, so in this case, just adding Ram wont really help a lot.

Not worth it. 1GB should be fine, and it'd be a waste.

To be fair, DDR2 is actually still SDRAM, as is DDR. So if you say that you currently got SDRAM it might mean very little to some people as this could be memory of any speed... Basically, the different types of RAM are classified as follows:

168 pin SDRAM:
PC100/PC133 or PC150. Now that is really old stuff... If you got that than in my opinion your system is classified as "industrial archaeology"...

184 pin DDR SDRAM:
PC2100 (266Mhz)/PC2700 (333Mhz) or PC3200 (400Mhz)

240 pin DDR2 SDRAM:
PC4200 (533Mhz) and above.

So gaza14: what memory have you got in your system at the moment?

Cheers:
Chris
