I went to my RAM manufacturer's website, and i found that my memory sticks are supposed to run at 2.0~2.1 volts. and my bios defaults DDR2 memory to 1.8v. and the options are greyed out so I can't change the voltages.

Is there some way to unlock those settings in the BIOS so I can change the voltages so I'm not running my memory undervolted? if you'd like further details, i'm using an MSI P-35 Neo Combo motherboard, and 2 gigabytes of G.Skill PC2 6400 DDR2 800 RAM. My System: Ezekiel

is there some overclock function? try to turn it on but only change the memory voltage thats how it is in mine i think

maybe you can flash the bios, google the make of your motherboard and ram voltage

i've tried that too and it hasn't yielded any results. and there is an overclocking function, but even if i turn it on, it doesn't free up those options. they remain on auto and are still inaccessible.
i'm consulting anyone i can. i wish i could talk to MSI. but i don't have all the necessary information to even fill out the tech support request form :( which is utterly ridiculous. i'm at a loss for what to do. |

well what are the options for ram overclocking? are there different ones likes .. sli or expert for example

there aren't any hardware specific overclocks. there is just a D.O.T. and that i suppose controls everything at once. and it has different levels going from 1% up to 15% overclock. i don't have 2 pci-e slots so there wouldn't be a SLI overclocking utility in there in the first place.
and i just had a chat with my father about this little problem. he suggests that perhaps the manufacturer website is out of date, and that these newer models may be working with a 1.8v setting rather than the advertised values. he suggests this may be the case because if the voltage goes down, the RAM slows down with it. and if the timings don't match, then none of my stuff would be working in the first place. and i had a thought of my own. in the power settings, it says the minimum for ddr2 is 1.8v, and maximum is 3.3v. perhaps it already recognizes that these dimms require more power because it is set to auto config, and it is giving me the voltages i need without my knowing. i would LOVE to be able to open up these settings and double check. it's just that i feel uneasy about it. if for instance GSKILL or my mobo maker would have put something on the net that would answer a question on this, that would make me feel better about it. it's just that there is nothing in the motherboard manual about this sort of thing. it doesn't even suggest that you can change the voltage options in the first place. i'll see if i get a response out of MSI or GSKILL, and leave it alone for the time being. hell i have no choice BUT to leave it alone. i can't even change anything. perhaps i'll double check the voltages these need with newegg, and other websites. not sure what else to do. maybe someone with these concerns will see this and enlighten me meantime. |

well i used sli as an example as i know with the 780i chipsets there are 2 options for ram overclocking , sli greys out the speed and expert allows you to edit the speed

AHA! THANK YOU NEWEGG!
it turns out that newegg suggests these dimms require 1.8-2.0 volts of power. and since it's defaulted at 1.8, i'm not actually undervolted at all apparently. i don't need to change anything after all... i wish i'd thought of checking newegg before... one more reason to love that website. i guess if any of you figure out how to unlock those settings in the meantime, feel free to enlighten me. but it appears my problem was resolved before it even began. thanks for the help though guys. appreciated. :). i guess now i'll worry about posting pics of the new machine. ^_^ |
