Buffered and Unbuffered RAM

Default Buffered and Unbuffered RAM
I am under the impression that Unbuffered RAM is better unless its for a server.

Can't really remember where i know that from just always been my impression. Can anyone tell me the difference, and if it would affect performance if buffered RAM was used?
