Hi, I was just wondering, what do bus speeds depend on? what determines them, like the GPU core and GPU memory

GPU core (3D) - 540MHz
GPU memory - 702MHz

I have a quad core processor 2.40ghz

What made me wonder about this was that a friend of mine has a dual core computer yet his bus speeds are much higher than mine. why?

what Bus speed are you on about? Are you talking about the Front side bus {FSB) speed? if you are, that's the speed the CPU runs at, CPU's have something called a multiplier, this is a value that is usually around 10 ish, give or take a few depending on the CPU family, this is determined by the North bridge chip on the motherboard. The reason why his duel has a higher FSB will probably be because his CPU has a lower multiplier value (meaning to get the same clock speed, a higher FSB is needed) (Multiply the Multiplier by the FSB and you get the clock speed)

If that's the bus speed you are on about, there it is, if it isn't could you elaborate?

actually i really didn't know anything about bus speeds and i was referring to bus speeds that nvidia monitor shows, so I'm not really sure if its FSB or not, where else on the computer can I check my bus speeds?

Those are clock speeds not bus speeds.

They are effectively the speeds of you graphics chip and memory chip.

Generally better, newer chips run at higher clock speeds not a lot different to CPU clock speeds.

Yea, Like dave said, those frequencies that you posted are the clock speeds, if your friends are higher, it most probably means he has a newer gfx card. the clock speeds tend to increase with the better the card is, however this isn't the only factor int he performance of the card. However in general (atleast with the higher end cards at the moment) ATI cards have a much higher clock speed compared to Nvidia, but performace if fairly similar.

This is also sort of referring to my other problem on these forums, about my nvlddmkm problem, which is occurring right now, I'm checking the bus speeds on the nvidia monitor and its telling me that all the bus speeds are at 0mhz, FSB, memory, and Gpu core (by the way I'm also in safe mode)

why is it all at zero? Because I'm in safe mode? or another reason..

I think there is just something wrong with the Nvidia monitor, have you tried any other monitoring programs (like CPU-Z and GPU-Z)?

Results will probably be skewed in safe mode.

Yeah, it's safe mode thats doing that. Ok thanks for the information on bus speeds I think I'm good with that now.
