| I have a new laptop, top of the range, and the fan is constantly going on and off. Its very loud aswell...I downloaded an app called SpeedFan to see what the temperatures were setting of the fan. And it comes on at 35 degrees, then stops at 23 degrees!! This is far too cold for a laptop. I know its not a problem and not doing any harm to the laptop but its just too loud and shouldnt be on 80% of the time. There is no options in the BIOS to change the settings for the fan. I have contacted manufacturers and they cannot even fix it themselves and they say its not a problem - very annoying. I have latest BIOS updates etc. Does anyone know how I can change the settings for the fan -whether I could do it through the BIOS or through a third party program. I am a bit worried about using SpeedFan cos Im not familiar with it. My laptop is a Hi-Grade Notino D7000 running Vista 32-bit. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated. |

| It would be rather dangerous to the lappy to change the settings of the fan, even if you could. The fan speed is directly related to how hard the cpu is working and how much waste heat it has to exhaust from the chassis or how much cool air it needs to pull into the chassis to cool the cpu (should it be an intake and not an exhaust fan). It's going to be loud because 1) Laptop's run hot, especially the higher end models with higher end cpu's. And 2) It's a small diameter fan, these have to spin at faster speeds, due to being smaller, to shift any decent amount of air/heat. I would recommend that you leave well enough alone as far as the fan is concerned but you could also look at getting a laptop cooler. The active variety (with fans installed) blow air onto the underside of laptops. But you'll need to ensure the fan on the bottom is an intake and not an exhaust because fans blowing air into an exhaust fan will only conflict with the airflow.

| many laptops have general utilities programs where there is an option to change fan settings. you may, for example, be able to set it at a constant level, or a slower speed. I have a Sony now, and an Acer before that and both had fan control options - you just got to look for them. If the option exists then you should be able to change without harming the computer. Dont use an external prog to do it though.

| Thanks for replies...I understand that it is very dangerous to use thrid party app to change the settings of the fan, but surely a fan starting and stopping between 23 and 35 degrees is wrong? The manufacturers say it is just the way its built. I also understand that when the cpu is working hard the fan will obviously come on. But even when my laptop is in an idle state, no viruses nothing running - the fan will still kick in. I will def. take your advice in not using an app. to change the settings... My laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor so I know its powerful. Also there is a button that has a fan symbol below, and when i press it, a fan appears on screen and the propellors are reduced to 3 from 5. Which should mean the fan will slow down right? But this does not happen, the button appears to do nothing. Are the fan control options you mention cyberspacegenie made by the manufacturer for the machine (Sony, Acer) or are they provided my windows? Because I cannot seem to find anything in the control panel or BIOS to change the settings. |

| Firstly, and with respect, I don't care what anyone else tells you. You'd have to be mad to want to manually preset a fan speed on a laptop. The fan speed is dynamically adjusted, by the system, depending on cpu load and temperature. Leaving it at a user-preset rpm runs the risk of the cpu temp going above design levels. Secondly, just re-read your initial post. As I understand it now (correct me if I'm wrong please), you're saying the fan doesn't spin up until the temp hits 35 degrees and stops at 23 degrees? If so, I don't understand the problem. 23c is cool for a cpu, and with heatsinks in place anyway, it doesn't really need active cooling. Once it's hitting 35 degrees the temp sensor is spnning up the fan to reduce the temp. It's more than likely part of a power saving feature (as in battery) to keep you going longer should you be mobile and away from a power point.

| You are correct - my fan begins spinning at 35c and when cpu temp hits 23c it stops, and so on. So do you mean that you think the laptop is fine then? Or do you think its something else that it setting of the fan? Im a little confused sorry. I just thought that the CPU should be hittin between 55-70c before the fan begins to spin up? |

| Look at it this way: The fan spins the warmer the cpu gets. So based upon that, everythings fine. Problem is, fans aren't the best things for getting rid of heat (that's what heatpipes and heatsinks are for). Fans primarily, in a laptop anyway, cool those down, not the cpu. They cool the cpu. So it's just showing that the passive cooling arrangement (again, the pipes and heatsink) are doing their job and the fans only kicking in when it needs to. If it left it until near design-threshold then you could experience crashes, BSODS, any number of errors because the fan verrrry slowly gets rid of waste heat.
