I am planning to upgrade my old compaq but there is an issue when using upgrading the RAM. I tried to upgrade it from 64mb to 256mb, but it will not boot up. then when I put the original RAM back in it does not even reconize that there is any RAM at all. Any help would be much apriciated.

the power is on and the hardrive does spin up. When the origional ram is used there is there is no output to the screen. When the new ram is used it displays the Compaq and in the upper left hand corner there is some white text that says 0 kb ok and then increases until it gets to about 131000 kb ok then stops and does not continue to boot up.
