hey im looking for some help.
im hoping to upgrade my processor as its the worst thing on my computer. everything else im happy with but i dont have a clue cos my mate build the pc for me. my mother board is: GIGABYTE GA-8N-SLI ROYAL LGA 775 MOTHERBOARD and my processor is: INTEL P4 530 SOCKET 775 3.0J GHZ 1MB 800MHZ. so im looking at getting a core 2 duo cpu. but the ones iv seen are like 2.4/2.67 ghz but its saying its really fast and better that singles core ones. i dont get it, is this faster? if i bought either this one : http://www.overclock.co.uk/product.p...t=730&view=rel or this one: http://www.overclock.co.uk/product.p...t=730&view=rel firstly are either of them faster the my current one? and secondly would they fit in my motherboard? Thanks guys hope you can help! |

Hi David, firstly, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your motherboard doesn't support Core2 cpu's.
It does support the 775 socket that intel use, but the board doesn't have the updated voltage circuitry to enable installation of these new cpu's. If you want a core2 then you're going to have to upgrade the motherboard as well. It will support Intel's older revision of dual-core cpu's, in the form of the pentium D series. But to be frank I honestly wouldn't bother. As they run hot, are still expensive, and aren't true dual-core architecture, just two single core 6-series Pentium 4's glued together.

But prior to suggesting, you'll also need to take into account that if you change the motherboard Windows will more than likely tell you to p-off as you'll have changed too much of the system for it to run. Each component scores points when windows is first installed. Some components score more points than others (hence when you install Windows it asks you to ensure every component/addon/peripheral is attached) so when you change or remove components Windows changes it's score for whats left, and if you reach a certain point, it won't boot. Also, what type of hdd's do you have? (Eide, Sata etc) as this will make a difference if spec'ing a current motherboard. Current motherboards also only use DDR2, is your 4gb ram DDR2? See where i'm going with all of this.....? Regarding the cpu speeds comparably, don't be sold on the Ghz rating. Bottom line: The E6600 (2.4ghz) has been found to beat the older Pentium D965 extreme in everything, this chip had a rating of 3.73Ghz. It's all down to the architecture. Regarding the boot up being slow, are you running Norton as your AV software? The slowdown in gaming is due, (you're correct), to the cpu. Your card has more than enough umph for current games, especially at the 1366x768 resolution on your screen. The cpu is causing bottlenecking.
