I have upgraded my CPU to AMD Sempron 2800 (was athlon 1.2) booted up power comes on but nothing else, no signal sent to monitor. I have also fitted a new heat sync and fan. I removed the memory whilst fitting the CPU for more access.

Thinking that it must be a duff CPU I re fitted the existing and have same problem! Any ideas???

Bear in mind I am a technophobe!

Not really, the only thing that would realistically cause this is if the heatsink wasn't mounted correctly.

This would then fry the processor? The heatsink can only go on one way, Wouldn't the processor work for a second before damage though. As stated nothing is getting through to the monitor,

Im at a loss?

It may shut down after a second or just not turn on at all. If it's making good contact with the CPU it should run though.

Did you do anything else: remove/remount the motherboard, etc? Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Did you reconnect the fan to the motherboard on the heatsink?
That might be the problem

The fan works fine and is connected to the motherboard, there is a slight high frequency whistle that can be heard before the system is booted. Haven't touched CMOS.

Yeah, I'd reset that and see if that fixes it.
